English Tenses: Definition, Types, Rules and Examples

Introduction

Tenses are one of the most important topics in English Grammar. Tenses help us understand the time of an action. There are three main types of tenses: Present Tense, Past Tense and Future Tense. Each tense is further divided into four parts.


What is Tense?

  • She has been working since morning.


Past Tense

1. Simple Past Tense

Subject + V2 + Object

Example:

  • I played football.

  • She visited Delhi.


2. Past Continuous Tense

Formula:

Subject + was/were + V1+ing + Object

Example:

  • I was reading a book.

  • They were playing cricket.


3. Past Perfect Tense

Formula:

Subject + had + V3 + Object

Example:

  • I had finished my homework.

  • She had left the office.


4. Past Perfect Continuous Tense

Formula:

Subject + had been + V1+ing + since/for

Example:

  • I had been studying for three hours.

  • They had been working since morning.


Future Tense

1. Simple Future Tense

Formula:

Subject + will + V1 + Object

Example:

  • I will play football.

  • She will visit Delhi.


2. Future Continuous Tense

Formula:

Subject + will be + V1+ing + Object

Example:

  • I will be studying tomorrow.

  • They will be playing cricket.


3. Future Perfect Tense

Formula:

Subject + will have + V3 + Object

Example:

  • I will have completed my work.

  • She will have written the letter.


4. Future Perfect Continuous Tense

Formula:

Subject + will have been + V1+ing + since/for

Example:

  • I will have been studying for two hours.
